Smart ways to use AI in the newsroom (and 5 risks you can’t ignore)

As a journalist, I always like to dig deeper into any story, and I am sure you all do the same. So, when the news broke about the Air India accident in Ahmedabad, I began checking updates from many different sources. Since I have been taking a lot of interests in AI these days, I thought of asking ChatGPT something very specific.

I typed in: “Is the Indian government using AI to find the causes of the Ahmedabad plane crash?”

The answer I got was: “Air India crash probe uses AI-powered tools… investigators are using AI to analyse engine, flaps and gear data from the black box…”

I was thrilled at first and almost started writing a LinkedIn post about it. But then the journalist in me stopped and said - wait, check the facts. So, I did. And you know what? There was not a single piece of evidence to support this claim, not in an official statement, not in any reliable news report.

I went back to ChatGPT and told it that I could not find the information anywhere. This time, it admitted that the earlier claim was wrong. That moment hit me hard and it showed how easily even an experienced journalist can get fooled by confident but completely fake “facts” from AI.
